Use Effective Time Management Techniques and Learn to Prioritize
One of the keys to effective stress management at work is effective time management. The more purposeful you are about where you spend your time the more productive you will become. Effective time management isn’t about just staying busy at work, it is about staying focused on those tasks that have the most value. To become more purposeful about your time try some of the following:- Identify High Value Tasks: Take time to identify those activities that bring the most value to your organization. What are the priorities for the organization and how does your job fit within those priorities? The more your efforts line up with the organization’s goals, the more productive you will be in your work.
- Prioritize Tasks: Identify and tackle the most critical tasks first. Remember, the goal is to get the important things done, not just the next thing done.
- Break Down Large Tasks: Divide overwhelming projects into smaller, more manageable chunks. Create small victories by focusing on the smaller steps that help you tackle the larger projects.
- Use a To-Do List: Write down tasks, deadlines, and appointments to stay organized. If you try to keep everything in your head, it can become overwhelming. Instead, use the concept of “on paper, off the mind.” You don’t have to remember everything; you just must remember where you keep your list.
- Time Blocking: Schedule specific time slots for different activities. By setting blocks of time to work on specific tasks or projects, you can become more purposeful about how you spend your time.
- Learn to Say "No": Politely decline requests that are unrealistic or beyond your capacity. Remember, to stay focused on those tasks that have the most value. Don’t just take on a task because you can. Sometimes you have to say no so that you can accomplish your own priorities.
- Delegate When Possible: Assign tasks to colleagues when appropriate. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Delegate when you can or ask for help when necessary.
Use Mindfulness and Learn Relaxation Techniques
Stress can take a toll on the body. One of the reasons is that stress activates the “fight or flight” response of the autonomic system of the body. Whenever we feel stressed, our body prepares for action even if that action is just sitting in front of the computer. As a result, our body tenses up while our mind is working. It is, therefore, important to learn to relax your body instead of letting it stay in a constant state of tension. Try these practical strategies.- Mindful Breathing: It is amazing how often we hold our breath whenever we are stressed. Deep breathing that comes from the diaphragm helps us relax. Practice deep breathing exercises throughout the day.
- Meditation: Take time throughout the day to quiet your mind and recenter your thoughts. Even a few minutes of mindfulness meditation can reduce stress.
- Take Short Breaks: Step away from your desk for a few minutes every hour. It will help you manage your stress if you do.
- Listen to Music: While not for everyone, relaxing music can help calm your nerves.
