Does Therapy Help with Depression?

The short answer to the question “Does therapy help with depression?” is yes.  To understand why therapy helps with depression it is helpful to first understand the nature of depression.  Depression is an illness that affects both the mind and the body.  When someone is depressed, they feel exhausted and their body aches.  They may have difficulty concentrating and they often wonder “what’s the point of living”.  Depression is an illness that zaps a person’s energy and replaces it with feelings of “doom and gloom.”  If left untreated, depression can lead to long term health consequences and/or suicide.  Some of the symptoms of depression include:
•    Difficulty Concentrating – When someone is depressed, they often have difficulty concentrating on tasks or activities that they can normally do.
•    Depressed mood – This is a general feeling of being down.  It isn’t a fleeting feeling, but instead tends to occur consistently throughout the day.
•    Feelings of hopelessness – When someone is depressed, they begin to feel like things will never get better.
•    Loss of interest in all activities – When someone is depressed, they lose interest in doing things, including those things that they usually enjoy.
•    Episodes of Tearfulness – A person who is depressed may begin to cry for no apparent reason.
•    Feelings of worthlessness and guilt – When someone is depressed, they begin to feel worthless and may start ruminating about mistakes they have made in the past.
•    Agitation – Many people with depression feel agitated and easily angered.  This tends to be particularly true for many men who become depressed.
•    Sleep Disturbance – Someone who is depressed may sleep for extended periods of time and still complain of feeling exhausted.  Alternatively, they may lay in bed for hours without being able to sleep.
•    Suicidal Thoughts – Many people who struggle with depression begin to experience suicidal thoughts.  The greater the depression, the more intense these thoughts tend to be.

Therapy Helps with Depression

Therapy can help a person alleviate their symptoms and get back to living a happier life.  Many people benefit from individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, or an Intensive Treatment Program that focuses on mental health issues.  Some of the reasons that therapy helps are listed below:
•    Therapy Can Teach You Coping Skills – Many people don’t have the coping skills they need to overcome depression.  Therapy can help them develop the skills they need to effectively deal with the challenges of life.
•    Therapy Can Decrease Your Isolation – When someone becomes depressed, they often isolate from family and friends.  As a result, they often get into a circular pattern of thinking that leads them into a dark place emotionally.  Therapy can help you get out of those dark places and help you re-engage in life.
•    Therapy Can Help You Heal Old Wounds – Unresolved pain from the past can lead to depression.  Therapy can help you resolve old wounds so that you can live the life that you want.
•    Therapy Can Help You Grieve Old Losses – Sometimes people get stuck in grief.  Therapy can help you grieve old losses.
•    Therapy Can Help You Build Your Self-Esteem – Many people with depression have a low self-esteem.  Therapy can help you update your image of yourself and help you develop the skills you need to increase your confidence and ability to function effectively.
•    Therapy Can Give You Hope – When someone is depressed, they often don’t see a way out of the depression.  Therapy can help you get out of the depression and help you see the possibilities around you.
•    Therapy Can Help You Change Your Thinking – Depression can lead to unhealthy thinking patterns.  Therapy can help you change your thinking which makes it easier to lift your mood.
•    Therapy Can Give You Support – Remember that you don’t have to deal with the depression alone.  Therapy can give you the support you need to overcome the depression and get back to living the life that you want.
